Migrating Domain Hosting from Squarespace to Amazon Route 53 – Getting Started

I used to host my domains using Google Domains. However, late last year, Google stopped offering this service and began transferring customer domains to Squarespace. Managing your domain in Squarespace is straightforward, but I encountered one issue: Squarespace doesn’t offer an API to manage domains like Google did. Since I recently passed my AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam, I was looking for ways to get more experience with AWS services like Route 53. Over the next few blog posts, I’ll outline the steps required to transfer a domain from Squarespace to Route 53. All in all, the process will take about five to six days.

Step 1: Decide and Prepare

As with any task, the first step is making up your mind to proceed. Once you’ve decided to transfer your domain, log into your Squarespace account and select the domain you want to move. Navigate to the “Overview” page and disable the “Domain Lock.” When you do this, a confirmation pop-up will appear. Click “Confirm” to unlock your domain and begin the migration process.

Step 2: Request a Transfer Code

After unlocking your domain, the next step is to request a transfer code to provide to Route 53. You can request a code by clicking the “Request Transfer Code” link at the bottom of the page.

Once you do, Squarespace will notify you that it may take up to 24 hours to receive the transfer code. Be prepared to wait during this step.

What’s Next?

Once you receive the transfer code, you’ll be ready to start working in Route 53 to complete the domain transfer. I’ll cover these steps in the next post in this series. Stay tuned for more details, and thanks for reading!
